Interview with the cover designer

VICKY SCOTT

How do you do Vicky Scott?
I am doing good thanks! Sitting in my studio with some tea and surrounded by lots of paper and listening to radio 6 (am I allowed to say that?)

Of course you are. What's going on in this cover then?
I wanted to do a design featuring lots of wildlife you can see in and around London... and then I ended up going to Old Street. The idea changed a bit and I decided it would be fun to come up with some hipster animal characters hanging out at a cafe in their shades and leather jackets.

You involve birds in a lot of your work - why so?
I often use them to provide movement in my pictures and draw the viewers eye through my image, but they also give a sense of innocence and escapism. I'm very fond of wildlife in general (rabbits are my favourite but you can't have them flying through the air).

Didn't you do one of those painted elephant sculptures that were placed around London for charity recently? How did that come about?
Yes I did. My elephant Flocking to Freedom was exhibited in Covent Garden Market Piazza last Summer. She was then auctioned for the elephant family, a charity who support the indian elephant. I read the open call out for artists on the arts council mailing list for the project. I produced 2 mock up paintings and was lucky enough to be selected. Although I was really happy about this, when I learnt that the baby elephant was life-sized I had a bit of a panic as there was no way she would be able to get inside my second floor flat! I was offered a shared space (appropriately) in a disused shop in the Elephant & Castle shopping Centre.

Where can we see more of your work?
Here, although they might be doing server stuff over the weekend, so try here and here. And physically in Candy Cakes in Covent Garden, Reddoor in Greenwich. I also am doing a couple of East London based craft fairs nearer Xmas.
